It’s no secret that Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has had a rough season this year, even leading to an emotional press conference after one tough game. And while Carr might be trying not to think about his future with the team or as a free agent, it’s becoming quite clear that the Raiders are going to have to make a decision on Carr’s future with the team soon after the season ends.
As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out, the Raiders will have to decide whether or not to bring Derek Carr back next season shortly after the Super Bowl.
“Carr has a $32.9 million salary for 2023, which was guaranteed for injury at the time of signing. It, along with $7.5 million in 2024 salary currently guaranteed for injury, becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2023 waiver period,” Florio wrote on Pro Football Talk on Sunday afternoon. “The waiver period begins after the Super Bowl. If the Raiders are going to cut Carr — and escape that $40.4 million liability — they’ll have a narrow window in which to act.”
Just a few months ago, Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams called Carr a future hall-of-famer. Now the team has to decide whether or not to cut him.
