Quinnen Williams is due a new contract soon, but New York Jets coach Robert Saleh isn’t concerned about the process. While the Jets’ former Top 5 pick isn’t appearing at voluntary workouts right now, Saleh expressed optimism that the team and Williams would agree to terms.
“I speak for everyone — I probably speak for Quinnen — in that we all want to get it done sooner rather than later,” he said via ESPN. “I’ll let the business guys handle all that stuff, but it’s going to get done. He’ll be here for camp.”
Williams is entering the final year of his rookie contract. His base salary leapfrogged up to $9,594,000 in 2023 as part of the fifth-year option. He’s made $32,964,961 over the last four seasons.
The defensive tackle market took an interesting pivot point earlier this week. The Buffalo Bills extended the contract for former Top 10 pick Ed Oliver. Like Williams, Oliver was selected in the 2019 NFL Draft. So they have had equidistant careers. He will now make $45 million in guaranteed money. That’s sixth among all defensive tackles (Aaron Donald has $95,000,000 in practical guarantees) in the NFL now. So it will be interesting to see how that decision affects where Williams lands in terms of guaranteed money.
While the wait continues, it doesn’t sound like Robert Saleh is sweating the next contract for Quinnen Williams and that the Jets are going to get it done.
