Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins had his life cut short in April 2022 when he was slain by a dump truck after his car broke down on a Florida interstate.
The Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Report said Haskins was only “feet away from making it safely across the roadway when he was struck and killed by an old dump truck.”
Rick Ellsley, Haskins’ lawyer, faults the operator for his client’s death. Ellsley filed a lawsuit on his late client’s behalf on Monday.
“The truck driver hit Dwayne with the front left side of the truck. This is directly in front of where the driver was sitting behind the steering wheel. The driver told police that before he hit Dwayne, he said Dwayne ‘ahead of his vehicle’ in the center lane,” wrote Ellsey.
It didn’t have to be this way, according to Ellsley.
“Many questions remain as to why the truck driver did not avoid hitting Dwayne given the high visible activity in the area before the impact and the fact that other drivers did not hit Dwayne. The truck driver’s cell phone records have not yet been disclosed. The report also notes that the driver refused to provide a blood sample to police at the scene and still has not provided alcohol test results.”
