The Philadelphia Eagles made news Friday as the team signed free agent safety Terrell Edmunds to a one-year deal, according to multiple reports.
ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler was the first to report that the former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back would stay in Pennsylvania.
The Steelers selected Edmunds with the 28th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Edmunds had starred with the Virginia Tech Hokies before entering the NFL, as he was named an All-ACC Third-Team selection in 2017. Edmunds played in a total of 79 games (75 starts) across five seasons with the Steelers, recording 410 total tackles (15 for loss) with five interceptions and 26 passes defended.
His best season in Pittsburgh came in 2020 when he recorded 68 total tackles with two interceptions, and a career-high eight passes defended. He also received a Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 70.9 in 2020, the highest of his career to date. Ahead of the 2021 season, the Steelers declined Edmunds’ fifth-year option, which made him a free agent following the season. He later re-signed a one-year deal to return to The Steel City and totaled 70 tackles, and five passes defended in his final season with the Steelers.
Edmunds figures to help replace Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and Marcus Epps, who have both left Philadelphia in free agency. He joins fellow safety Justin Evans, formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who signed with the Eagles earlier this week. We’ll have to see if Philadelphia can recapture some of that potential that made Edmunds such a tantalizing prospect just a few years ago.
