The New England Patriots’ coaching staff has undergone a lot of change this offseason. They couldn’t escape Sunday without some change, either. Sports Illustrated reporter Albert Breer reported that tight ends coach Nick Caley will join the Los Angeles Rams for the same position.
Breer tweeted, “The Rams are hiring ex-Patriots TEs coach Nick Caley as their new tight ends coach, per sources. Caley interviewed for OC jobs with the Pats, Jets and Texans, and had other inquiries for other jobs, but saw the Rams as the best fit. Sean McVay adds a rising, young coach to his staff.”
Later, Zack Cox of NESN provided a big nugget: Caley had been team’s longest-tenured assistant coach on offense.
“Patriots lose their longest-tenured offensive assistant to a lateral move,” Cox tweeted. He went on to say, “Reported new hire Will Lawing, who coached TEs under Bill O’Brien in Houston, would be a logical replacement.” So it sounds like New England already have their Caley replacement in mind.
Caley joined the Patriots coaching staff in 2015. Bill Belichick hired him after he spent a decade at the collegiate level. Belichick hired him as an offensive assistant, a title he held for two seasons. Then, the Patriots promoted Caley to tight ends coach in 2017. He held that title since and added fullbacks coach from 2020-2021.
