The New England Patriots are set to enter a new era, hiring former star linebacker Jerod Mayo as the successor to legendary head coach Bill Belichick. For Mayo, the top plan for 2024 appears to be very clear. Find the quarterback of the future in the 2024 NFL Draft.
New England went through some pretty drastic struggles at the quarterback position in 2024, first with former first-round pick Mac Jones and later with Bailey Zappe.
Neither showed all that much to inspire confidence in them being the starting quarterback for the team next season. And Mayo also seems to realize this, heavily hinting at the Patriots planning to select a quarterback with their No. 3 draft pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
“I’m very excited,” said Mayo of the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. “What I will say is this. We’re going to draft the best player for a position that is very important. You put the pieces together.”
It seems to be pretty clear what Mayo is alluding to here. The only question is which quarterback could Mayo potentially be hinting at. Fans debated which quarterback they believe Mayo is talking about on social media.
It shouldn’t exactly come as a surprise to see the Patriots outwardly saying that they are likely selecting a quarterback with their top pick.
However, it sure will be interesting to see whether this means they stay at No. 3 in the upcoming draft or potentially move up in the draft.
If someone like Caleb Williams is their preferred option out of this upcoming draft, they may need to move up to land him.
That may be a possibility for the Patriots, especially if the Chicago Bears, the team with the No. 1 pick, are sold on Justin Fields being their quarterback of the future.
It sure would be fascinating to see the Patriots potentially move up, largely because they have recently been extremely against doing so while Bill Belichick has been the head coach of the team.
