The New England Patriots are in the first season of what the organization is hoping is a long and prosperous partnership between head coach Mike Vrabel and young quarterback Drake Maye on the East Coast. On Sunday night, the duo earned their first signature win together, defeating Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills on national television.
As great as taking down the league’s last unbeaten team might have been, the Pats confirmed some harsh news on Monday that serves as a brutal reminder of just how harsh the NFL can be.
“Patriots RB Antonio Gibson, who was quickly ruled out on Sunday night, tore his ACL and is out for the season, sources say after the MRI. A hit to RB depth,” reported NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Monday.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Again I ask, WHY is your RB2 (and RB1 for that matter) your kick returner?? This is BOUND to happen,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Unfortunately the expected result, but really sucks. Gibson has been solid for the team. Curious if they look at veteran RB options for workouts in the next day or two or elevate UDFA from Florida A&M Terrell Jennings off the practice squad,” one fan added.
“Knew this was coming just hoped it wouldn’t. Prayers for a speedy recovery Gibby we need you bro,” another fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Patriots look without Gibson the rest of the way.
