While Eric Bieniemy is no longer with the Kansas City Chiefs, the respect that Patrick Mahomes has for his coach transcends teams. Mahomes had remarkable success under Bieiniemy while he worked as an offensive coordinator. Mahomes and the Chiefs won two Super Bowls thanks to a dynamic offense. So there’s no denying the impact that he made on the two-time NFL MVP.
When the Chiefs report to training camp next week, they’ll do so without Bieniemy, who left this past offseason to take the same position with the Washington Commanders. Mahomes won’t be with Bieniemy for the first time in his NFL career, and it’ll be interesting to see how the two fare without one another.
“It’s definitely going to be different. He was a voice that’s been in this locker room my entire career,” Mahomes told Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press. “And so, to lose that voice, I mean, I’m excited for Washington because I know how inspiring that he can be and how smart he was for us. Luckily for us, I think coach [Andy] Reid does a great job of finding great coaches to supplement some of that great leadership that coach Bieniemy had for us. I’ll trust in coach Reid to have the right plan to kind of do whatever we can to get ourselves in that right moment again.
“It’s definitely going to be tough losing him. So much respect for EB. He’s such a great coach but a great person. But I’m excited for these other guys to step up and be those coaches that they learned from him and learn from coach Reid to be.”
Mahomes will work once again with Matt Nagy, who was recently elevated to offensive coordinator. Nagy is reportedly an heir apparent candidate for Reid when he chooses to retire.
