The NFL could make a significant rule change drastically affecting special teamers, and Pat McAfee isn’t happy about it.
According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the NFL will host a vote on Tuesday that could move where the ball is spotted after a fair catch. If the vote goes through, the ball will be placed on the 25-yard line after a fair catch on a kickoff. But McAfee, a longtime former punter for the Indianapolis Colts, is unhappy.
McAfee spoke his mind, as usual, on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday afternoon. He tweeted emphatically, “This rule is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE.”
“You see that one on top there?!” McAfee asked with a lot of anger behind him, referring to the potential rule change on the graphic.
“So, I was being told by people behind the scenes–Not only at that particular position, special teams coordinators, which I’m friends with… like seven of them who actually, you know, I keep in contact with. Head coaches don’t; GMs don’t like this,” McAfee revealed. “Nobody really likes this rule potentially being an NFL rule which would be a fair catch on a kickoff going to the 25-yard line.”
“It’s the most amateur, bush-league-looking ******** I have seen in a long time when it comes to the NFL,” McAfee fiercely said.
The former punter said that he understood the “strike zone” in place now in football and that the league is trying to legislate head-hunting out of the game. McAfee stressed that he knew they had to make all the rule changes “to save people’s brains” and knocked down people who claimed that the NFL wasn’t “real football anymore.” However, he reiterated that “this particular rule is absolute garbage.”
“This is disgusting; this is not what football is.”
Pat McAfee is never afraid to speak his mind. So we’ll have to see what he might say if the Tuesday vote approves the rule.
