Will Aaron Rodgers say that he wants to continue playing for the Green Bay Packers or will he ask the team to trade him elsewhere? That’s the question in many NFL fans’ minds. It’s also the question that Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is hoping to get an answer on soon so he can plan his next steps.
Plenty of other NFL teams would love to know as well. Interest in acquiring Rodgers would be sky-high if he decided he wanted a fresh start elsewhere and teams like the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers have been rumored as potential suitors.
Gutekunst, who was in Indianapolis for the upcoming NFL Combine, spoke with reporters on Tuesday and was asked about whether or not he’s receiving any trade offers or interest from other teams while they all wait to hear from the two-time NFL MVP. According to him, his phone is silent.
“Not at all,” Gutekunst said. “Not at all. Not a single person.”
That, of course, could change if the quarterback does inform the team that he wants out of town.
Gutekunst did say that he does hope to hear from Rodgers before free agency begins on March 16 so that he can plan accordingly.
“I would hope so, yeah,” Gutekunst said. “That’s obviously the start of the new league year. There’s a lot of decisions that have to be made before that. So that would be helpful. I would think we would know something before then.”
As far as what they’re expecting, he also says that the Packers are planning for multiple scenarios.
“It’s really no different than every year because as you get into this time there’s just a lot of unknowns,” Gutekunst said. “You always have free agents you’re trying to bring back. You don’t know how that’s going to go. You gotta kind of have Plan B, Plan C, and those things. It’s really no different. [It] garners a lot of attention because of the player and his status, but really no different.”
Rodgers has implied he’ll make his decision known soon enough. Until then, we’ll all be reading the Instagram tea leaves to figure out which way the wind is blowing.
