The Green Bay Packers find themselves in an uneasy spot this offseason as the future is currently unclear for both star quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams.
Rodgers still has a contract with the Packers set to keep him there until the end of the 2023 season, but he has the option to opt-out after next year. Regardless, Rodgers will need to be traded if he wishes to play for another team next season.
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst addressed the media on Wednesday and was asked how they would handle Rodgers if he asked for a trade.
Gutekunst mostly avoided the question on potentially trading Rodgers, calling it a “hypothetical that he’s not going to discuss.”
He did add that Rodgers is obviously the center of the attention this offseason, and that essentially everything will revolve around his impending decision.
As for Adams, he is a free agent going into the offseason, and the team will either need to extend his contract or franchise tag him. Gutekunst addressed that as well, and it appears that he has a clear preference in what he would like to do with wideout.
“It’s not something we’d like to do if we don’t have to,” Gutekunst said about potentially franchise-tagging Adams. “We’d certainly like to come up with a long-term deal that works for both sides.”
As Gutekunst said, it seems like what the Packers decide to do with Adams will ultimately be decided by what Rodgers does.
Rodgers posted a cryptic social media post on Monday evening, which many interpreted as him saying goodbye to the Packers and his teammates. However, he seemed to deny that on Tuesday.
It’s hard to interpret what Rodgers is thinking or meaning most of the time, but it definitely seems like it is a real possibility that the Packers could be without one or both of their superstars next season.
