The Green Bay Packers haven’t parted ways with Aaron Rodgers quite yet. Green Bay and the New York Jets, Rodgers’ likely destination, remain in an apparent holding pattern that hasn’t birthed a trade yet or the future Hall of Famer. On Monday, the Packers made sure to try and set the record straight.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunt held court on Monday and talked to reporters about a variety of things. Namely, his team’s legendary quarterback. Gutekunst revealed to the world that “he tried to contact Aaron Rodgers ‘many times’ this offseason to discuss how he fit in the Packers’ future.”
One quote, specifically, has grabbed the NFL world.
“Our inability to reach him or for him to respond in any way — I think at that point … I had to do my job,” Gutekunst said, via reporter Matt Schneidman.
So Green Bay was unable to contact Rodgers at all about involving him within the process. While Tom Pelissero noted that Gutekunst said “all options are on the table,” it sure doesn’t sound like the team will bring him back. To a point, it makes you wonder about the speculation that the team was “done with him.” If he was ignoring their calls, that’s one way to tank interest from the other side.
The NFL world buzzed about this latest update in the saga.
