Odell Beckham Jr. has been on quite the roll lately.
The Super Bowl champion receiver recently signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens that also includes $3 million in incentives.
This week, he also received good news from a judge in his lawsuit against Nike.
The judge denied Nike’s request to dismiss the case outright, according to TMZ. Though that’s a standard request from a defendant, the denial here means the case can go forward to discovery.
Beckham Jr. claims that Nike suppressed shoe sales that would’ve triggered an automatic, lucrative contract extension with the apparel company. Beckham Jr. also alleged Nike withheld money they owed him for what it deemed “footwear and glove violations (customizing Nike products).”
“Unfortunately, Nike did not honor its commitments,” Beckham Jr. told TMZ when he filed the lawsuit. “Throughout our partnership, I have kept my promise and fulfilled my obligations to the brand. I am extremely disappointed that I’ve had to take these measures to ensure Nike fulfills their obligations and promises.
“Today, I’m taking a stand not just for me, but to set a precedent for all athletes who have dedicated their life to the sport they love – especially those who don’t have the means to stand up for themselves. We are held responsible for fulfilling our obligations under our contracts, but we also have to hold powerful companies like Nike accountable for honoring their commitments too.”
