Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is never afraid to state his opinion.
So when ESPN asked him about this year’s team, he pointed out it’s better than last year’s team, and is in some ways better than any team he’s had in his 35 seasons as owner.
“Some years going in, I’ve known that we were in better shape than others,” Jones said. “There are parts of this team that we’re in as good shape as we’ve ever been in since I’ve been a Dallas Cowboy.”
That’s quite a bold statement, given the Cowboys won three Super Bowls between 1992 and 1995 early in Jones’ ownership reign. Yet the Cowboys haven’t been back to the big game since then.
One could get the impression Jones sees this as a do-or-die year, especially given some pressing salary issues the team will need to resolve in the near future. Yet he denied he’s thinking about blowing up the roster if the Cowboys again fall short of the Super Bowl.
“How we are as a team as we evolve through this season, all of that we’ll weigh,” Jones said. “We could very easily have a team that doesn’t hold the trophy up but be dramatically better than one that if you cleaned house. So we’ll let that set of facts, [let] that play during this ’23 year be the influencing things when we get to ’24.
Naturally, Cowboys fans agreed with Jones that this might be the best roster in years. And the many Cowboys haters are predicting failure.
