The Las Vegas Raiders withstood everything the Baltimore Ravens could throw (and run) at them in a thrilling 33-27 overtime victory on Monday night. The win was capped with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Derek Carr to Zay Jones, which launched a massive celebration for the team’s first home game in its new home.
However, that touchdown wouldn’t have been possible if not for defensive end Carl Nassib. His strip-sack of Lamar Jackson, which ended with a recovered fumble by the Raiders, changed the entire outcome and ensured that Vegas could send the game into overtime.
For Nassib, the huge play was the icing on the cake of a historic evening. Nassib came out as gay in June and, last night, became the first active, openly gay NFL player in a game in the league’s history. Nassib’s announcement was included as part of the broadcast as well.
“I’m really happy that we got we got the win on the day that kind of made a little bit of history,” Nassib told reporters after the game.
When told by one reporter that a fan wearing his jersey in the stadium was continually being cheered on and supported by other Raiders fans, Nassib was extremely appreciative.
“That’s amazing; that’s a great story. I love that. I wish I could have seen [him],” Nassib responded. “It was really special, I’m really happy that we got the win on the day that kind of made a little bit of history.”
“I’ve played in a lot of games, now this is my sixth year, I try to make sure I really remember every single game. I won’t forget this one,” he added.
