The Minnesota Vikings are eager to see what they have in young quarterback J.J. McCarthy. The Vikings were one of the best teams over the course of the season last year behind a resurgent year from journeyman quarterback Sam Darnold.
The Vikings lost Darnold when he signed with the Seattle Seahawks at the start of this past offseason, paving the way for McCarthy to take the reins. McCarthy then got two starts from McCarthy before a high ankle sprain forced him out of Minnesota’s dominant win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Vikings were hopeful that McCarthy would be available for their Week Four contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Dublin, Ireland, but head coach Kevin O’Connell has just ruled him out again, according to one prominent league insider.
“Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy and LB Andrew Van Ginkel are officially out for Sunday vs. Pittsburgh, Kevin O’Connell said. C Ryan Kelly and DL Javon Hargrave are good to go,” reported Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Are we seriously doing this again? Young QB gets injured and veteran leads us to the playoffs to lose in heartbreaking fashion,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Time to trade JJ McCarthy He has only played 8 quarters and looked good in just one,” someone else added.
It’ll be interesting to see when McCarthy can take the field again.
