Roger Goodell’s reign as NFL commissioner appears set to continue well into the foreseeable future.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday that NFL owners are set to finalize a multi-year contract extension for Goodell at the owners’ meetings next week in Phoenix.
Goodell, 64, who assumed the post in 2006, was under contract through March 2024.
While Goodell is a lightning rod for criticism when fans are upset about an issue, owners have been pleased with his work. In October, thirty-one of the 32 owners gave their compensation committee the go-ahead to start negotiating a contract extension. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was the lone exception.
NFL owners previously gave Goodell extensions in 2009, 2012, and 2017.
While Goodell’s contract details have never been officially released, the New York Times reported that he earned $128 million in two years from 2019 to 2021.
NFL fans had mixed feelings on the news about Goodell.
