NFL insider has telling update on Cam Newton’s chances of playing soon

The New England Patriots surprised many when they decided to cut Cam Newton last week and install Mac Jones as their starting quarterback. While head coach Bill Belichick has since said he has “nothing but positive thoughts and feelings” about Newton, the franchise decided that he was no longer going to be the guy to lead them.

Naturally, the big question now is where Newton may end up playing in the 2021 NFL season. The Heisman Trophy winner and 2015 NFL MVP says he has no plans to retire and wants to continue playing. While there were some thoughts that Newton could end up in Houston or elsewhere, nothing has materialized yet.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport made a radio appearance on WEEI on Thursday and he made it clear that he doesn’t see any action at the moment about any NFL team bringing Newton in right now.

“If there is, I haven’t found it,” Rapoport said during the “Gresh & Keefe” appearance. “I would never rule anything out in that situation because sometimes teams like to keep it quiet. I just, I haven’t found a possible home.

And, really that’s not surprising. If you go back last year before the season, (Newton) didn’t have a ton of interest before the Patriots decided to sign him. And this offseason he didn’t have a ton of interest before the Patriots decided to sign him again. So, it’s not like teams are going to look at the preseason tape and say, ‘OK, well, now I believe he can be a starter.’ “

Newton brings a lot of talent and experience to the table but the simple truth is that there just aren’t many starting quarterback needs at the moment. That might change after the first couple of weeks when some teams get a little concerned about their current starters. But for now, Newton may just have to be okay hanging out in wait-and-see mode.
