The New York Jets and the New York Giants have a natural regional rivalry given that they share a stadium and a city, but the heat on that rivalry seemed to get turned up a notch this week after a hard illegal blindside block by Jets receiver Randall Cobb. And it sounds like he’s going to be paying for it out of his pocket.
According to New York Giants writer Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Randall Cobb has been give a pretty hefty fine of $13,889 for the illegal blindside block on Giants safety Bobby McCain, which caused a concussion.
“Jets WR Randall Cobb was fined $13,889 for unnecessary roughness – illegal blindside block on Friday against the Giants. The block left S Bobby McCain concussed and angered OLB Jihad Ward. Ward and QB Aaron Rodgers went face to face on the following drive as a result,” Raanan said in a tweet this weekend.
The block happened in the fourth quarter of the final preseason game, and New York Giants defensive lineman Jihad Ward was not happy about either the hit or the Jets’ players’ reaction to it.
We’ll have to see if this situation adds the the intensity of the rivalry between these two teams this upcoming season.
