With Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets parting ways this offseason, the team is also looking to part ways with wide receiver Davante Adams after trading for him last season. The team is reportedly looking to trade him elsewhere, but it does not sound like that’s going to be able to happen due to the brutal contract situation the team faces.
Last week, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the New York Jets were “taking calls” from teams about trading Davante Adams.
“Sources: The #Jets are now taking calls on star WR Davante Adams, open to trading him prior to the start of the league year. No surprise with his $38.2M cap number. If they can’t get a deal, they are expected to release Adams, who could rejoin QB Aaron Rodgers with a new team,” Rapoport said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
However, as NFL insider Mike Florio points out, just because the Jets are open to trading him does not mean that it’s at all likely a trade will happen thanks to the absolutely massive salary Adams would be due the next two seasons.
“No one is going to pick up a contract that pays out $70 million over the next two years. And if a new team wants Adams to re-do the deal in order to facilitate a trade, Adams should decline, get cut, and maybe get even more from that team (or another one) as a free agent” Florio wrote for Pro Football Talk.
“It’s highly unlikely that Adams will be traded. No one wants that contract. And Adams has no reason to change his contract.”
It’s a pretty brutal situation for the Jets as it means that they are just going ot have to let him walk to a new team with no compensation in return a year after giving up assets to add him to the roster via a trade.
Clearly, things just did not work out between Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets, and this is yet another sign of that failed partnership.
