New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields had an abysmal performance in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos. In what was a very winnable game, Fields was sacked nine times, and the Jets had negative-ten net passing yards on the day.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn was still supportive of his quarterback after the game, even while acknowledging that he took a step back on the day.
“There’s a number of other guys that have to pick their game up too, so I don’t want to sit there and pin this all on Justin,” Glenn said.
“You just can’t sit there and say, ‘Oh man, we’re going to bench him,’ because I thought in some other games he’s played well. So I’m not looking at this as just, ‘Man, he played the bad game, we’re going to bench him.’ I don’t see it that way.”
Still, Fields’ improvement may be even more difficult to come by than originally anticipated moving forward, as news has broken that his top target is set to miss some time.
“An MRI today revealed that Jets WR Garrett Wilson hyperextended his knee and he now is expected to miss, as one source said, ‘a couple of weeks,'” reported ESPN’s senior NFL insider Adam Schefter on Monday.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Jets rock bottom for total yards and now minus their lead receiver Wilson for weeks. Washington’s defence can sit and read the Sunday paper. It’s Captain Fields at the helm, and the iceberg’s not far off,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Tough news for the Jets. Losing Garrett Wilson for a couple weeks is like taking the spark plug out of the offense. Just hoping it’s not more than that,” one fan added.
“JF gonna be responsible for getting two franchises the #1 overall pick lol. JF also was late and threw behind Wilson in the play he got injured. Brutal,” another fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see how Fields looks without Wilson at his disposal.
