The New York Giants are in their first season of the post-Daniel Jones era. New York added three quarterbacks this offseason: veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, as well as rookie Jaxson Dart, whom New York selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft.
The Giants named Russell Wilson the starter, with Dart being listed as the second-string quarterback heading into the season opener against the Washington Commanders.
Dart made it clear that he is willing to wait for his number to be called.
“I feel like whenever my number is called, I’m gonna go out there, I’m gonna play my game and I’m gonna ball,” Dart said.
“That’s just my mindset any time I touch the field. Obviously, Russ is the starter, and he’s going to do amazing. He’s had such a great camp and has played at an elite level. My job is just to be the best teammate and be ready whenever it is. I’m excited for Russ and what he’s going to do this year.”
However, Dart expressed confidence in himself for when he finally gets his opportunity.
“When I step on the field, I expect to play at a high level,” he said. “I have the confidence that I’m going to be the best player on the field every time.”
Now, it appears that opportunity may be imminent.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll wouldn’t commit to Wilson being the starting quarterback next week after the Giants’ 21-6 loss on Sunday.
“We’re going to get home and look at our game,” Daboll said after being asked if he’d entertain the idea of starting Dart next week, according to ESPN.
It’ll be interesting to see who is under center to start the Giants’ next game against the Dallas Cowboys.
