The NFL Draft is fast approaching, with the first round set to begin on April 28.
It is certainly an interesting year when it comes to the quarterback prospects in the draft class. There isn’t exactly a clear top option when it comes to quarterbacks. Some believe that Liberty quarterback Malik Willis could be the top guy, but it is far from a sure thing. The other quarterbacks that are seemingly in the hunt to be the first one selected are Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral and Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett.
A number of teams are seemingly in the market to take a quarterback in the first round, including the New Orleans Saints.
While the team re-signed veteran quarterback Jameis Winston this offseason to an extension and brought in veteran Andy Dalton to back him up, they might want to look to the future now as well.
Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com said on Saturday that he believes that the Saints could be interested in taking Pickett in the first round, with the possibility of him learning from Winston and Dalton during the 2022 season.
Drafting Pickett would make sense if the Saints don’t believe Winston is their quarterback of the future. While Winston is only 28 years old, he has been a mixed bag as an NFL starter. He has shown flashes of brilliance, then quickly followed that up with questionable decision-making in many instances.
It is certainly plausible that the Saints don’t envision Winston as their quarterback of the future. Giving a player like Pickett a year to develop as a backup could be the perfect situation for him, and the franchise, going forward.
