Earlier this month, the New England Patriots signed rookie quarterback Malik Cunningham to a three-year contract extension and many even thought there was a chance he could push for the starting role with starting quarterback Mac Jones struggling. Not only does it look like that won’t be the case, but he’s now off the team’s roster.

On Tuesday, the New England Patriots announced that they were waiving Malik Cunningham from their roster just 10 days after signing him to a contract extension.

This move comes as a slight surprise after Cunningham played six snaps in a Week 6 loss against the Las Vegas Raiders.

However, it seems that the Patriots simply determined that Cunningham was rather expendable this week with Mac Jones solidified as the team’s starting quarterback and backups Bailey Zappe and Will Grier both healthy and on the team’s active roster.

It’s certainly a surprising announcement certainly generated a lot of reactions on social media.

There’s a pretty good chance that Cunningham could rejoin the team as a practice squad player if he clears waivers. If that does turn out to be the case, he’ll have to see if he is able to climb his way up the depth chart once again.
