The Minnesota Vikings are looking to finally get the J.J. McCarthy era after he missed all of his rookie season due to a meniscus tear suffered in the preseason. However, this year has only seen the young quarterback available for two games so far, due to a high ankle sprain.
Minnesota has turned to veteran Carson Wentz as the starting quarterback in McCarthy’s absence. Unfortunately for the Vikings and McCarthy’s development, McCarthy may be forced back onto the field before he is fully recovered, because Wentz’s season has ended prematurely, according to one prominent insider around the league.
“Vikings QB Carson Wentz will undergo surgery on his left shoulder and miss the rest of the 2025 season, sources tell The Insiders. Wentz gutted it out as long as he could. But he was in severe pain Thursday night in L.A. and now will get the shoulder fixed,” reported Tom Pelissero of NFL Network on Twitter on Monday.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“There was no need to have him play as long as he did Vikings down 34-10 in the 4th and every series ending with Carson Wentz in agony completely unnecessary,” Warren Sharp wrote on Twitter.
“Absolutely nuts he stayed out there on Thursday. Not even for performance reasons, he was just clearly in so much pain it was unbelievable they let him stay out there,” someone else added.
“The fact KOC didn’t take him out and put Brosmer in when he was clearly struggling every single play won’t sit right with me ever. KOC is on my shit list until further notice,” another fan added.
Hopefully, Wentz can return to the field next season at full health.
