Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick revolutionized the way the position is played with his dynamicism as a runner, paving the way for today’s dual-threat passers such as former MVPs Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen.
Since retiring from his legendary playing career in 2016, Vick has transitioned to the sidelines and currently serves as the head coach for Norfolk State Univeristy.
Vick recently sat down for an interview with NewsNation’s NewsNation Live with Connell McShane, where he talked not only about his goals in coaching, but also his thoughts on the Rooney Rule, which is aimed at increasing divesity on NFL coaching staffs and in executive roles. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is currently moving to abolish the measure.
“It’s all about putting the right people in a place, man. The most credible people, you know, not seeing color and appreciate what people bring to the table. That’s what it all boils down to,” Vick responded after being asked if he felt the rule was effective.
Vick said in the interview that the Rooney Rule is not necessarily his focus right now, as he tries to turn around a Norfolk State program that went 1-11 in his first season at the helm.
“I’ve been really, really blocked into coaching at Norfolk State. We’re down there trying to be the best team that we can be. We’re coming off a season where we feel like we should have had more wins. So, hey, look, man, you know, it’s all about having the most credible candidate.”
He is, however, open to a position on an NFL sideline down the line, once he feels he’s ready, and it is his goal to eventually coach at the highest level.
“Absolutely. I’m going to do everything I can to work as hard as I can, study as much as I can to be the best that I can be. You know, to help my team, to help the coaches around me, to help my players, you know, try to find a way to conquer their vision and exceed their expectations. ”
“I would love to when the time permits and when it’s a credible situation for me in terms of my learning curve, “he continued, “where I understand exactly what needs to happen in order for a football team to win and be structured the right way.”
