It’s no secret that the NFL goes out of its way to protect its quarterbacks with its roughing the passer penalty, and the league has made it clear that it has no plans to stop doing so, citing high television ratings. But as Dallas Cowboys star linebacker Micah Parsons has continually pointed out, that sets the league up for hypocrisy when it fails to protect other star players at other positions.
Micah Parsons has been a vocal critic of the NFL’s roughing the passer enforcement on a number of occasions this year. He absolutely blasted a controversial penalty decision earlier this year, saying the league should “change the rules or just make it 7 on 7.”
He has also blasted the league’s inconsistency and hypocrisy regarding the players it chooses to protect, pointing out that the league does not call personal foul penalties for egregious and dangerous plays against defensive players. And on Monday, he hit that point once again.
“Still no one talking bout this guy jumping on my neck?! But yet we can’t land on a quarterback!” Parsons said in a Tweet.
Parsons isn’t wrong – it’s clear that the league values quarterbacks more than any other player on the field. But unfortunately for him, it’s also clear that isn’t going to change anytime soon.
