Last week, Mexican football team Galgos de Tijuana (Tijuana Greyhounds) of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA) announced that it had signed former San Diego State star punter Matt Araiza, who was drafted by the Buffalo Bills but was cut from the team after rape allegations surfaced. But it appears that the team’s announcement was just a little premature.
According to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter ESPN, Matt Araiza has not actually signed with Galgos de Tijuana and is instead hoping for a chance to punt in the NFL.
“Former Bills’ punter Matt Araiza, who was reported to have signed with Galgos de Tijuana of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional in Mexico, never signed with the team and remains a free agent, hoping for an opportunity in the NFL, per his agent Joe Linta,” Schefter said in a tweet.
Araiza was drafted in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills, but he never played in a regular season game for the Bills as the team cut him from the roster shortly after the allegations surfaced.
Earlier this month, police declined to charge Araiza with a crime related to the allegations and he and his family have maintained his innocence throughout the process.
