The NFL played a 16-game schedule for 43 seasons. Then, someone realized that there was more money to be made by adding a 17th game to the regular season. Now, the league is fighting tooth and nail to make another change, according to one of its owners.

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft recently pulled back the curtain on the league’s desire to remove a game from the preseason so that it can add an 18th game to its regular season. Kraft also said that the league wants every team to play an international game each season.

NFL fans reacted to the news on social media.

“Starters don’t play three preseason games anyway. Let’s not act like they are playing 20 games now. They play about 17 and 3/4 and will now play 18 and 3/4 out of 20, giving everyone else five quarters of preseason to make the roster,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“And take away a home game for American fans of their respective teams fans and season ticket hokders to push the global agenda of the nfl. Awful,” someone else added.

“Hate it. If they want to expand international play, set aside two weeks in the middle of the season. Have every team play their international games Thursday-Monday of the 1st week at stadiums throughout the world. Then every team gets an additional bye the following week,” one person added.

It’ll be interesting to see if league commissioner Roger Goodell and the owners get what they want.
