The Detroit Lions freed up cap space as they cut veteran defensive lineman Michael Brockers on Friday.
Brockers, a former first-round pick out of LSU, spent two seasons with the Lions. He came to Detroit after playing his entire career previously with the Los Angeles Rams. The move to cut Brockers was reported on Thursday night. Dave Birkett, longtime Lions writer, reported on the move.
“Michael Brockers and the Lions are amicably parting ways after two seasons,” reported Birkett. He noted that Brockers was a team captain last year and could play again next season “if the situation is right.”
Detroit made the move official on Friday afternoon. They made the announcement on their Twitter account.
They included a statement from Lions EVP and GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell. The message read:
“We would like to thank Michael Brockers for his leadership over the last two seasons. As one of our team captains in 2022, Brock’s veteran voice and presence were instrumental in helping guide and develop our young locker room. He is one of the true professionals of our game and we have the highest respect for him as a man. We wish him and his family well on their next chapter.”
Brockers played just six games with Detroit in 2022, the fewest he’s played in a single season in his career. In 2021, his first season in Detroit he played 16 games and recorded a sack and 52 total tackles. In his career, he’s amassed 29 sacks and 451 total tackles.
