NFL world reacts to Jared Goff’s massive contract extension

The Detroit Lions have entered a new era under head coach Dan Campbell, reaching the second round of the playoffs for the first time in 20 years this past season. A big reason for the success has been the steady play of star quarterback Jared Goff, who the organization rewarded handsomely on Monday for his impressive play in Detroit thus far.

For many, Goff was largely seen as an afterthought after being moved by the Los Angeles Rams in the Matthew Stafford trade. And early on, it even seemed like Goff may not experience much success in Detroit, struggling heavily to win in his first year with the team.

However, as Dan Campbell and company have built the roster around their quarterback, Goff has continued to increase his production. This past season was perhaps the best of his career, throwing for 4,575 yards with 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 67.3 percent of his passes, a career-high for him.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Lions have agreed to terms on a contract extension with Goff that will make him the highest-paid Lions player in franchise history, a four-year $212 million dollar deal that will keep him in town through the 2028-29 season.

In terms of average annual value across the NFL, Goff only trails just Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow as the highest-paid quarterback in all of football.

It’s quite a bit of money for the Lions to pay Goff. So naturally, fans had plenty to say about the move on social media.

The Lions may have paid a pretty penny to make Goff the long-term option at quarterback for the team. But his numbers are hard to argue with. And chances are the team should be in prime position to compete once again in the NFC this coming season.
