Former Pro Bowl safety Landon Collins was once one of the most promising young safeties in the NFL with the New York Giants. However, Collins decided to sign with the Washington Commanders, and his career has been downhill ever since.
He is now back with the Giants and Collins detailed on Wednesday that leaving New York was never his plan.
Collins revealed that Giants former general manager Dave Gettleman ultimately didn’t want him to stay with the organization, so he decided to sign elsewhere.
“I want fans to understand. It wasn’t the Giants, It was Dave Gettleman,” Collins told Pat Leonard of New York Daily News. “It sucked, I wanted to stay but Gettleman didn’t want me here. So I had to take my chances somewhere else.”
Collins’ last two seasons have been riddled with injuries, which made it so no team wanted to take a chance on him. Ultimately New York brought him back onto their practice squad, which Collins called a “humbling experience.”
“It’s definitely humbling coming from when you’re the top [guy] and now you’re back to ground one.”
Collins seems to be relieved to be back with the team that drafted him, and he added that he wants to retire with the Giants one day.
“I’m just happy to be back playing,” Collins added. “Coming back, most likely hoping to retire as a Giant, is a dream come true.”
The Giants have unexpectedly been a very good team thus far this year, currently sitting at a 4-1 record.
Landon Collins has shown Pro-Bowl-level play in the past, and he could be a huge addition to the Giants’ defense that could be competing for a playoff spot down the road this year.
