Former No. 3 overall quarterback Trey Lance got the start for the San Francisco 49ers in the team’s first preseason game this week with Brock Purdy still sidelined as he recovers from his injuries. But unfortunately for Lance, the offense didn’t seem to immediately click when he was under center.
Trey Lance played the entire first half for the team, but he didn’t exactly light the world on fire, especially at first. The Niners’ offense had three consecutive three-and-out drives before they eventually found the end zone.
It was clear that the offense struggled to start the game, but head coach Kyle Shanahan did not put all the blame on Lance.
“It got off to a rough start for everybody. I don’t put all that on Trey,” Shanahan said according to 49ers Webzone. “I mean, three three-and-outs for the whole offense the first three times, so I don’t put that all on Trey by any means. I thought the whole offense was sloppy to start.”
Lance, meanwhile, said that he should shoulder the blame for the poor performance.
Lance finished 10-of-15 through the air for 112 yards while being sacked four times. He did lead the team on their lone touchdown drive of the game, but it’s safe to say that he didn’t convince many people that he should start over Purdy if healthy.
