The Kansas City Chiefs have not had a clear top wide receiver since the departure of former star wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins ahead of last season. And fans hoping that the team would make an off-season move to bolster their receiving corps got some pretty bad news this week.

During an interview with Adam Teicher of ESPN this week, Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach made it clear that the team thinks Kadarius Toney, who the team acquired from the New York Giants last year, will be the team’s No. 1 receiver this coming season, despite his lack of experience and his injury history.

“He’s predominately been a guy that is a slot receiver, returner, runner — a gadget guy, if you will — but I don’t know if there is a limit on his game because he has a vertical game,’’ Veach said according to Teicher. “I don’t know if [his college team, Florida was] one that vertically pushed the ball down the field, and his time early on in New York, I don’t know if they were a team that really vertically pushed the ball down the field.

“It’s a fair question to [ask]: ‘Has he ever played with a quarterback that likes to push the ball down the field?’ We have a lot of high hopes for him. He was a first-round pick for a reason. There’s a reason why we traded for him and we felt like he was first-round talent.”

This isn’t exactly the news Chiefs fans were hoping for, and they were pretty skeptical over the move.

It’s worth noting that the Chiefs didn’t have a clear-cut No. 1 receiver last year and they still won the Super Bowl. So the situation is probably not that dire.
