The Buffalo Bills took down the Kansas City Chiefs 24-20 Sunday, but they were trailing 20-17 at the two-minute mark. The Bills were driving, though, on a drive that started at their own 24 with just over five and a half minutes left. And one of the most impressive plays on that drive came right after the two-minute warning, with Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen keeping the ball himself and leaping over Kansas City safety Justin Reid en route to a first down:
The “I mean, he’s an alien” commentary from NFL on CBS analyst Tony Romo in that clip helps show how remarkable this was. And the 16-yard run was one of four rushing plays for the 6’5”, 237-pound Allen on this drive, two of which led to first downs. It led to the continuation of the drive, which Allen (seen above after the game) eventually finished off on its 13th play. He did so with a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dawson Knox:
And the Bills then sealed the win when defensive back Taron Johnson picked off Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes:
On the day, Allen completed 27 of 40 passing attempts (67.5 percent) for 329 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed 12 times for a net of 32 yards, receiving only slightly less carries than Bills’ RB Devin Singletary (who picked up 85 yards on 17 rushes).
And while not all of Allen’s rushes were for notable gains, some of them came on short-yardage attempts. This run in particular showed what a weapon he can be on the ground as well as through the air. Heading into Sunday, he had 1,651 passing yards and 14 passing touchdowns (against four interceptions) with 133 completions on 199 attempts, plus 225 rushing yards and two touchdowns (with four fumbles) on 35 carries. That kind of dual threat is hard to stop, and that’s part of why the Bills are now 5-1 after their win Sunday.
