Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen (17) throws against the New York Jets during the first half of the home opener at MetLife Stadium on Monday, Sept. 11, 2023, in East Rutherford.

It’s hard to envision that Josh Allen could’ve played worse. The Buffalo Bills had all the momentum after Aaron Rodgers suffered an Achilles injury just four snaps into his New York Jets career, but Allen for his part, was unable to take advantage of all the air being let out of the building.

Allen’s biggest concern has always been his reckless play. Turnovers are going to happen with Allen, but the Bills are willing to live and die with the results because he makes such spectacular plays. Unfortunately, though, the turnover issues continue to persist, even after Allen led the NFL in turnovers a season before. He vowed that he would get better and that turning the ball over at an extreme rate would stop, but it hasn’t, and his biggest bugaboo reared its ugly head during Monday night’s loss to the Jets.

The Jets defense seems to have Allen’s number. Not that that’s an excuse for his poor play, but it’s just the truth. Gang Green’s defense was able to keep the game close through the first half, with safety Jordan Whitehead intercepting Allen in the second quarter. And while that interception didn’t amount to more than a punt, it was a sign of things to come—two more interceptions and a fumble.

After the game, an exasperated Allen admitted that he was trying to force the ball before letting out a huge sigh.

“Same ****, same place, different day,” Allen said.

He was asked to expound on his answer.

“I hurt our team tonight,” he added. “I cost our team tonight. This feels eerily similar to last year, and I hate that it’s the same. I do.”

It remains to be seen if Allen is able to shake off this brutal performance. He took accountability for the performance and pointed the finger in his direction. While it’s only Week 1, the Bills’ dreams of winning the AFC East, let alone the AFC, won’t get very far if Allen continues to be this careless with the football.
