The San Francisco 49ers provided an update on quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The worrisome news for Garoppolo and the Niners is that it isn’t a good one.

It was thought a few weeks ago that Garoppolo might be able to return to the 49ers for the playoffs since he didn’t appear to have broken his foot. But on Wednesday, his status changed for the worse.

SFGate.com wrote that “A Garoppolo comeback isn’t ‘realistic,’ according to an NFL Network report hours ahead of Sunday’s 49ers-Buccaneers matchup in Santa Clara. While Garoppolo isn’t having surgery, according to Ian Rapoport, he’s out for more like three months, which would roughly be the Super Bowl.”

Injuries have hit the 49ers hard this season and it hasn’t relented yet. That includes the versatile Deebo Samuel, who suffered an MCL injury during their victory over Tampa Bay. Third-string quarterback Brock Prudy also hurt his ribs in that game as well.

The news of Garoppolo’s lack of progress is a blow to a team that looks like a serious Super Bowl contender. The team could be in even more trouble if Purdy’s status declines as well.
