It was assumed by many when Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh missed National Signing Day to pursue an interview with the Minnesota Vikings that he was the leading candidate for their vacancy. However, the Vikings went in another direction, hiring Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell to be their new head coach.
Reports came out earlier this week that Harbaugh’s camp was putting rumors of interest from other teams out into the media, including the Las Vegas Raiders, Miami Dolphins, and the Chicago Bears. According to those reports, there was not much interest reciprocated by these teams.
After this failed experiment to test the waters of the NFL’s interest in a possible return, Harbaugh was asked by the Detroit Free-Press what will be next in his future as a head coach.
“From here on out, I’m working at the pleasure of the University of Michigan, because that’s, in my heart, where I want to be,” said Harbaugh.
“Sure, the Super Bowl is the greatest prize in our sport. But winning a national championship. That’s pretty darn great. Let’s do that.”
Harbaugh admitted in this interview that he wanted to return to the NFL because he had an itch to get back to the Super Bowl and win it, something he didn’t do in his appearance in the 2012-13 season with the San Francisco 49ers.
For now, it looks like Harbaugh will be back in the hunt for a college football championship. However, it’s hard to believe that, if the NFL comes calling one day in the future, he would not jump at the chance to try and win a Super Bowl with another team.
