Following a sometimes-curious process, Indianapolis Colts officially hired former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen to be their next head coach last week. Now, they’ve reportedly found his new offensive coordinator.
Indianapolis is reportedly hiring Jim Bob Cooter for the OC position, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
The 38-year-old coach who played quarterback for the Tennessee Volunteers has been working his way up the NFL coaching ranks since 2007. He eventually became the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions between 2016 and 2018. The. New York Jets then hired him as the running backs coach under head coach Adam Gase. He also spent this past season with the Jacksonville Jaguars as their passing game coordinator under Doug Pederson.
As for how he and Steichen know one another, Cooter briefly spent time as a consultant with the Eagles’ offense in 2021.
It’s worth noting that Cooter won’t call plays for the Colts as Steichen said last week that he will continue to do that in 2023.
