The New York Jets are hoping that the second season of the Aaron Glenn era goes much better than the first. After a disastrous season with Justin Fields as the starting quarterback, New York and Glenn have brought in Geno Smith for the 2026-27 campaign.
Smith was brought in to be the starter, but things behind him on the depth chart are a lot murkier. The Jets have Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook on the roster, and drafted former Clemson Tigers standout Cade Klubnik in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL draft.
According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, the Jets plan on evaluating Klubnik before deciding on adding a veteran quarterback to the room.
“The Jets haven’t signed a veteran because they want to see what Klubnik can do over the next month. That goes for Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe, too,” Cimini wrote, “but it’s really about Klubnik, a fourth-round pick.
“Klubnik looked good at the recent rookie camp, but that was against mostly undrafted free agents and tryout players. The speed will intensify at OTAs, which should give the coaches a better idea of his ability to absorb and execute the system.”
The Jets have already met with veteran Russell Wilson, who said that he was offered, but that he is also mulling an opportunity in the media.
“They offered me,” Wilson said of his meeting with the Jets, “and I’m trying to figure out what the next best thing is for me to do. I still know I can play ball at a high level, but also I have an opportunity to do TV, so we’ll see what happens.”
However, if Klubnik impresses over the next month, the Jets may make Wilson’s decision for him.
