The New York Jets reportedly want third-year quarterback Zach Wilson to return to starting for the team at quarterback. And apparently, so does Aaron Rodgers.
Reports emerged on Monday that the Jets are “leaning” towards putting Zach Wilson back in as the team’s starter.
There is however one problem. Wilson is reportedly “reluctant to stepping back in” as the team’s starter for the rest of the year.
It’s a pretty unprecedented situation to have a quarterback not want to start for a team if given the chance, which perhaps speaks to the tumultuous relationship between Wilson and the Jets organization.
Another twist has come to this story involving Aaron Rodgers. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Rodgers reached out to Wilson to attempt to “advise him” to return as the team’s starter. However, Wilson is still reportedly “apprehensive” due to “perceived injury risk” that comes with starting.
The Tim Boyle experience in New York has been a miserable failure since the team opted to go to him over Zach Wilson as their starter. They even pulled Boyle in favor of veteran quarterback Trevor Siemian in their game on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.
It can certainly be argued whether returning to a starting role would even be a positive in Zach Wilson’s career at this point.
On one hand, he could suffer an injury that could impact his future in games that are pretty much meaningless for the Jets at this point. On the other hand, other teams around the league could see this as a negative for Wilson, seeing it as a slap in the face to the Jets organization.
Regardless, it sure seems like Wilson is going to need more than just Aaron Rodgers to try and convince him to start another game in New York.
