The New York Jets had an extremely frustrating season last year, winning only three games. The Jets regressed on defense, becoming the first team since 1933 not to record a single interception, but also struggled on the offensive side of the ball.

Perhaps most notably, quarterback Justin Fields struggled mightily to push the ball downfield, hampering what the offense was capable of achieving despite having weapons such as Fields’ former teammate at Ohio State, Garrett Wilson.

The franchise made the decision to move on from Fields this offseason, leading to him signing in free agency with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he’ll presumably back up Patrick Mahomes.

The Jets have brought in Geno Smith to take over the starting quarterback role. For Smith, this marks a return to the franchise that drafted him in 2013, and Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is foreseeing a big year for New York with the veteran at the helm.

“He’s the guy that’s going to lead us to the promised land,” Glenn said of Smith, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

Fans reacted to Glenn’s proclamation on social media.

“Aaron Glen must have a different vision of The Promised Land than the rest of us,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“Yep, Cancun for Glenn by week 5 probably. Being a fired NFL coach is the promised land,” another fan added.

“Both of these dudes will be unemployed in 8 months,” someone else wrote.

It’ll be interesting to see how Smith does in his return to the Big Apple.
