The Dallas Cowboys have thier first draft under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer in the rear-view mirror. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was pleased with what he saw from Schottenheimer in the draft room.
“It was great to see [Brian Schottenheimer] and the confidence that we have with Will [McClay] and the scouts, and it was just great…” Jones said, according to the Cowboys’ official website. “To see that come together of Schotty taking these new guys, the approach to them, Will working the scouts… this was a good draft.”
The Cowboys were upfront about having to set their draft board up later than what would be typical due to the hiring of Schottenheimer as head coach, which happened a little later in the offseason than usual.
However, team COO and co-owner Stephen Jones was pleased with how much they depended on their board.
“The best thing we may have done it better than we have ever done it is stick to it,” he said. “There were opportunities there where we had to go away from needs and just take the best player… I think it all came together well and it worked out good for us.”
Jerry Jones isn’t afraid to improve the team’s roster outside of last week’s draft either, and revealed that adding a wide receiver via the free agency or trade market could still be in the cards.
“The train has not left the station if improvement is needed from what we’ve got on campus.”
This has quietly been the sort of offseason that could get the Cowboys back into contention in the highly competitive NFC East.
