A potential sale for the Washington Commanders has begun to really percolate. With the process tying into recent criminal investigation developments, a sale for the team seems significantly likelier than it ever has under disgraced owner Dan Snyder.
One name that can’t seem to step away from this discussion is Jeff Bezos. The CEO of Amazon is “looking into buying” the Commanders as one of the few people in the world rich enough to purchase them.
Bezos would be an outsider from the NFL owners’ fraternity. What’s the temperature check of things inside that fraternity? According to one NFL insider, it appears very favorable. SI.com’s Peter King spoke on the subject on Pro Football Talk.
“There’s a reason why the NFL was so aggressive in pursuing Amazon as the streaming partner for Thursday night,” King said to Mike Florio. “It is a very simple reason and a very simple fact of life in the NFL: NFL owners like the richest men in the world. They just do. And when there is one out there, who has some interest in joining your club in some way, the welcome mat goes out. And the welcome mat goes out so aggressively that it’s just logical to think that the NFL would want Jeff Bezos to buy the team.”
King notes that Bezos already owns The Washington Post, the local newspaper, a publication which Snyder has constantly been embroiled in conflict with. King adds, “It makes the most sense for any team since I have covered the NFL.”
Granted, you have to wonder if there’s any sort of conflict of interest, considering Amazon is a streaming partner of the NFL. But assuming that works out, the pulse of the NFL owners seems to suggest that they wouldn’t block a potential purchase from Bezos.
