The New York Giants are gearing up for the first full season of the post-Daniel Jones experience. Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson was brought in, and the franchise and head coach Brian Daboll made it clear that veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, who is in his first season with the Giants, is the starting quarterback to start the season.
However, Wilson isn’t the only new quarterback in New York. The Giants selected rookie Jaxson Dart in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft and signed veteran Jameis Winston. Fans were disappointed earlier in the season when the Giants listed veteran Jameis Winston as the second-string quarterback, even after Dart impressed in the preseason.
Dart took the decision in stride and made it clear that he was okay with waiting for his number to be called.
“I feel like whenever my number is called, I’m gonna go out there, I’m gonna play my game, and I’m gonna ball,” Dart said.
“That’s just my mindset any time I touch the field. Obviously, Russ is the starter, and he’s going to do amazing. He’s had such a great camp and has played at an elite level. My job is just to be the best teammate and be ready whenever it is. I’m excited for Russ and what he’s going to do this year.”
“Russ has completely earned that role,” Dart continued. “I just want to be the best teammate, and I want this team to win, so whatever my role is for that to happen, I’m going to do that to the best of my ability.”
However, Dart is working his way toward the starting spot faster than many anticipated, according to one prominent league insider.
“Giants’ Week 1 depth chart lists Jaxson Dart as Russell Wilson’s backup, QB2,” reported ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Not surprised, but I feel that Jameis Winston can be a backup somewhere else,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Winston is probably the best backup in the league. He will be on another team after week 1,” someone else speculated.
“Fail….Dart is clearly QB1 Let’s see how long it takes before Daboll makes the right call,” another fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see where Winston goes from here.
