While Trevor Lawrence is firmly the starting quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars, the depth chart got a little shake-up on Monday when the NFL franchise waived quarterback Jake Luton as part of an effort to trim their roster to 85.
Along with Luton, the team also released wide receiver Ryan McDaniel, outside linebacker Wyatt Ray, and running back Matt Colburn II and announced they would be waiving kicker Elliott Fry with an injury designation.
Luton was originally drafted by the Jaguars in the sixth round with the 189th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Oregon State. He made his first career start that season against the Houston Texans when Gardner Minshew was injured, completing 26 of 38 passes for 304 yards for one touchdown while also rushing for another score in a 27-25 loss. He would go on to appear in two more games that season, finishing 60-of-110 for 473 yards, two passing touchdowns, one rushing score, and six interceptions.
The Jaguars waived Luton in August 2021 and he quickly signed with the Seattle Seahawks, spending the next few months on their practice squad before being cut. The Miami Dolphins picked him up for their practice squad for the remainder of the year. This past February, he signed a reserve/future contract to return to Jacksonville.
Luton made two preseason appearances this season before being cut, completing 22-of-38 passes for 186 yards and an interception.
