The Houston Texans aren’t in the Super Bowl, but they’re in the headlines as Sunday’s big game approaches. While former Arizona Cardinals and Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury appeared to be in talks with Houston, the Texans have appeared to have gone in a different direction. Houston reportedly has hired its next offensive coordinator.
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported on Sunday morning that head coach DeMeco Ryans and the team hired Bobby Slowik to be the next OC.
The #Texans are hiring Bobby Slowik as their offensive coordinator, per sources,” Pelissero tweeted. “Slowik and DeMeco Ryans spent the past six seasons together in San Francisco, both starting their NFL coaching careers as defensive quality controls. Now, Ryans brings Slowik along as OC.”
Slowik, like Ryans, comes over from the San Francisco 49ers, where he recently served as Kyle Shanahan’s passing game coordinator. He’s coached in the NFL since 2011 when he started with the Washington Commanders as a defensive assistant. After Mike Shanahan was fired in Washington in 2013, Slowik was not retained on staff and later joined Pro Football Focus (PFF) as an analyst from 2014-2016.
He followed the younger Shanahan to San Francisco, where Slowik was a defensive quality control coach in 2017. The 35-year-old Slowik has since worked his way up to being one of the NFL’s top up-and-coming offensive assistants. He’s set to coordinate his first offense under Ryans.
