Former NFL star and current Georgia Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker denied that former president Donald Trump ever claimed the 2020 election was stolen.
Walker made the head-scratching comment in a recent interview with news anchor Russ Spencer for Atlanta’s local Fox affiliate, WAGA-TV. During the conversation, Spencer asked Walker if he accepted Trump’s claim that the election was stolen, a frequent question for GOP candidates that have been endorsed by the former president.
“I think you – I think reporters said that. I don’t know whether President Trump ever said that because he never said that to me,” Walker insisted, prompting Spencer to remind the former Georgia Bulldogs running back that Trump “says it over and over.”
“No, no, no, no, no” Walker replied. “I’ve never heard President Trump ever say that.”
The frustrating part about political arguments is that they’re usually drowned by nuance. But in this discussion, there is no nuance. Trump has claimed the 2020 election was stolen and I’m not quite sure how Walker missed it.
Trump’s assertions that the 2020 election was stolen helped spark an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. And after the incident, Trump claimed “the real insurrection happened on November 3rd, the Presidential Election, not on January 6.” Trump also recently announced he’s writing a book titled ‘The Crime of the Century’ outlining how he was robbed of the election.
Which lie is bigger? Claiming the 2020 presidential election was stolen? Or claiming Trump never alleged the election was stolen. One is more damaging, but it’s the dealer’s choice in terms of which is more ignorant.
