Giants owner shares honest thoughts on Daniel Jones

The New York Giants find themselves in the midst of a major transition.

After GM Dave Gettleman retired and the team fired head coach Joe Judge, the process of rebuilding the once-proud NFL franchise is underway. The team introduced Jow Schoen as their new general manager last week and there’s a strong assumption that they plan on hiring Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll as their next head coach.

If and when that happens, the next question will be whether or not the franchise wants to continue to lean on quarterback Daniel Jones or if they want to start fresh with a new signal-caller.

The Duke product was selected sixth overall by the Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft and has shown some flashes of solid play in his three seasons since but has also struggled mightily at times. Of course, he hasn’t always had the best support system around him either. In three years, Jones has 8,398 yards, 45 passing touchdowns, 29 interceptions, and 5 rushing scores. However, the Giants are also 12-25 in his games.

While we’ll have to wait and see what Schoen does, New York Giants co-owner John Mara made it very clear on Wednesday that he continues to see a future for Jones with the Big Blue.

“We’ve done everything possible to screw this kid up since he’s been here,” said Mara. “We certainly have not given up on Daniel Jones.”

And just to make sure there was no confusion about what the team’s plans were, Mara put the kibosh on the notion that the Giants might trade for Deshaun Watson.

We’ll see what the future holds for the Giants and Daniel Jones. But at least for now, he has a place in their immediate plans. He’ll have to play his way into their plans beyond that.
