The NFL world is buzzing over news emerging out of the Meadowlands. On Monday, the New York Giants made a huge splash when they acquired pass-rusher Brian Burns. Then, on Tuesday, the Giants made another move. It’s a bit of a smaller-scale move, but it still might create some sizable impact. The Giants signed veteran quarterback Drew Lock to a short-term deal.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport and ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the news that the Giants inked the former Mizzou standout to a one-year deal. Schefter said that the Giants will pay $5 million guaranteed to Lock.
“The Giants are signing Drew Lock,” Rapoport said. Rapoport credited his fellow insiders, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo, for tacking onto the report.
Schefter later reported that the terms of the deal are one year and $5 million.
“New York Giants are giving former Seahawks QB Drew Lock a one-year, guaranteed $5 million deal,” Schefter said.
Both insiders made the news public on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.
Lock has thrown for 5,283 career yards and 28 touchdowns in five seasons in the NFL. He’s spent time with the Denver Broncos and then most recently the Seattle Seahawks. Lock became involved in the ill-fated Russell Wilson trade that sent the former Super Bowl champion to Denver.
Now Lock goes to the Giants, where he’ll likely remain a backup. The Giants pick high in the NFL Draft and might well take a quarterback. This move also indicates that the Chicago Bears might have to look elsewhere to trade Justin Fields. His trade market was diminishing, and with the Giants out now, the options are few and far between.
The NFL world reacted to the news.
